Prayer Walking Guidelines

By Lance Witt

In hundreds of cities across the globe, ordinary believers are prayerwalking through the streets of their communities. God is awakening the church to the incredible power of prayer. The church is beginning to realize that our communities will not be reached or changed by clever church programs. Ultimately, change will come by the power of the Spirit and the Spirit is released through prayer.

Prayerwalking is a way to release the power of the Spirit in your city. Prayerwalking is simply walking and talking with God. It is often described as praying onsite with insight.

Helpful Hints:

  • Pray with a partner before you begin your prayerwalk. Ask God for insight, courage, and boldness as you pray.
  • Pray out loud, walk slowly down the street, and take turns praying with your partner.
  • Remember that many people are in darkness and bondage to sin in our cities. Pray fervently that the light of the gospel will break through to them and that they will come to Christ.
  • As you walk by homes ask the Spirit to give you discernment as to the needs in that home. For example, if there are lots of children’s toys in the yard it is likely that they have small children and that you will want to spend some time praying for the kids in that family.
  • Pray specifically that people will be open to the gospel, that God will prepare their hearts, and that God will send a messenger to share the good news of Christ.
  • Pray for people who cross your path. You don’t have to know their name.
  • Pray for other needs and people as God brings them to your mind.
  • Take time to reflect and allow God to speak to you as you prayerwalk. Ask God to burden you for prayer and for the things that have eternal significance.

"…So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it." Hebrews 4:16 (NLT)
